There are quite a few events going on in our Neighborhood each year,
sponsored by the Newport Hills Community Club.
We'll post an announcement on the home page as each draws near and, when possible,
post pictures from the previous year's event.
Each image will be a link to the larger version or you can go to the
archive of all photos.
Check out the
photo gallery for pictures from
past events.
Parents: remind your junior and senior high school age kids that
volunteer work for Newport Hills Community Club events is a GREAT way to
fulfill community service hours!
Annual Local Events Calendar
4th of July Picnic and Children's Parade
July 4th, 2008
The Newport Hills Community Club hosts a 4th of July Picnic and
Children’s Parade each year at the Community Park. The event starts with Ed Raftery and his antique car leading the children’s parade with decorated
bikes, trikes and stroller two times around the track at Eastside High
School. Prizes for all participants are handed out.
The
Newport Hills Community Church sets up their tents, tables and
chairs and helps with the cooking for the picnic. Church members also form a
choir and sing a wonderful selection of old time favorites along with
favorite patriotic songs. Children are entertained by
Dizzy’s Tumblebus plus
a giant inflatable room and a visit from the Fire Department in a real fire
engine. Frisbees, tug-of-war and other land games are also popular with the
kids.
After the parade hamburgers, hot dogs and other picnic food are cooked
and served by volunteers. Attendance is usually between 300 and 500 people.

For the past
4 years, the Newport Hills Community Club in conjunction with
the Red Apple Market, Newport Hills Chevron and the Newport Hills Business
Association has sponsored a car show.
This mid-August event has grown each
year in popularity, last year showcasing more than 80 vintage, classic and
hotrod cars. A pancake breakfast starts the day, with proceeds benefiting
our local Newport Heights Elementary School.
Raffle prizes and awards are presented throughout the day and a
mouthwatering barbeque, along with other goodies are provided by the local
merchants. Great fun for the whole family, and lots of really "cool" cars.
Each year on the Saturday and at least a week before Christmas the
Newport Hills Community Club sponsors a tour of Newport Hills by Santa
Claus, traveling behind a Fire Engine.
Along the way Santa hands out candy
canes and oranges to kids who come running out of their houses when they
hear the Fire Engine’s siren.
A NEW TRADITION: Santa will now be accepting canned food
donations on the route. All donations will be turned over to the
Newport Hills Community Church and will help assist people in our community.
If you would like more information or would like to volunteer to help with
setup and other tasks, just send email to Santa at
santa@newporthillscommunityclub.org
At the end of the tour Santa will spend some
time at the Newport Hills Shopping Center greeting parents and children who
would like a picture with Santa. There are also free treats donated by local businesses.
In addition to the Santa tour, the club also sponsors a contest for the
best holiday lights display. NHCC Board Member judges will canvas the
neighborhood in search of the most outstanding light display. The
winner receives a $25 gift certificate.
2007 Holiday Lights Contest Winner: The McDermott Family

Each
year on the Saturday before Easter the Newport Hills Community Club sponsors
the Spring Egg Hunt. The event is usually held in the morning at the Newport
Heights Elementary School Playground.
There are actually several separate egg hunts based on the ages of the
children. Children from ages 2 to 10 are invited to come to find
chocolate eggs and other delights scattered around the playground at
Newport Heights Elementary School. The hunt begins with the youngest
children at 9:00 AM sharp - followed by four age groups, so all children
will have some fun. A real live Bunny (about the size of a person)
always shows up to make it special for the smaller children. Great time
for family pictures.
